It's big! It's heavy! It's solid-state! It's got wheels! It's a classic!
I'm asking $350 Canadian for the Ampeg G-410 with a single large speaker. You'd best be in Greater Vancouver somewhere, because shipping this monster would be ridiculous. E-mail Derek at dkmiller@pobox.com if you're interested, or call me at 604-836-0752. Thanks for reading!
Yes, it's the Ampeg G-410 guitar amplifier, circa 1974. This model was originally designed as a giant combo amp for guitar, with four 10-inch (or perhaps 12-inch—it's big enough) speakers. Sometime in the past 30 years, one of its owners pulled out those little speakers in my amp and replaced them with a single large Radio Shack Realistic speaker, converting the rig into a pretty skookum bass amplifier.
Take a look (click on any picture for a bigger version):
Left to right: The G-410 from the front; with a Fender bass and guitar (so you can see how big this thing is); and from the back.
Above: The G-410 front controls, including (left to right) high- and low-gain inputs (two each); Channel 1 volume, bass, midrange, and treble (with EQ switches above); Channel 2 volume, bass, midrange, and treble (with EQ switches), plus dimension (reverb), and tremolo speed and intensity; polarity and power.
Above: The G-410 back panel, including (left to right) power cable, fuse, speaker out and power outlet; heat sink (middle); two line-out external amp jacks; and footswitch jack (I have no footswitch).
This goliath sounds pretty good. It's just big (about the size of a Marshall half-stack), so I'm selling it.
The amp has been used for bass amplification a few gigs, most recently last New Year's Eve, and it worked great with a fairly loud two-guitars/bass/drums rock band playing for a couple of hundred people. Mostly it's been in my basement, and it's pretty clean.
It's solid-state, and supposedly rated at 100 watts. There's quite a bit of EQ control for each of the two channels, especially with the midrange and ultra-high switches. If you want reverb and tremolo for your bass, you've got it. If you want to pull out the big speaker and put four 10-inch ones back in, it might make a good guitar amp again. It has a sturdy handle on top and two shopping-cart–style wheels so you can pull it pivoted back like a rolling suitcase.
